View fullsize Few know that behind the Pima Air & Space Museum are the remains of a historic USAF aircraft. On August 25, 1968, then Major Hunter F. Hackney flew 2 drop passes over the Duc Lap Special Forces camp in South Vietnam in support of US and ARVN troops. The drops delivered vitally needed ammunition through vicious concentrations of anti-aircraft and automatic weapons fire in which Hackney's Caribou sustained severe battle damage. Major Hackney then flew the paralyzed aircraft to a nearby forward operating base Ban Me Thout. Fully aware that the defenders of Duc Lap wouldn't be able to survive the night without further resupply, he then obtained this very Caribou and once again headed towards the fight, successfully dropping more supplies and again sustaining severe battle damage. The defenders of Duc Lap survived the siege which ended several days later. For his airmanship, bravery, and heroism, Major Hackney was awarded the Air Force Cross and the RVN Gallantry Cross with Silver Star. Another Caribou on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force is painted as this airframe, but this is the real deal. View fullsize P-47 Thunderbolt "Bonnie" down low at EAA AirVenture 2023. View fullsize The stunning Howard 500, an executive transport built in the early 1960s, departs the Fort Worth Alliance Airport. The aircraft had exceptional performance for the time, able to cruise at 300 knots and 21,000 feet. Sadly, this is another story of the right aircraft at the wrong time. By the early 60s, the executive market was already being taken over by turboprop aircraft such as the Gulfstream 1, and the Howard struggled to compete on the market. In the end, only 17 of these stunning aircraft were built. The pilot gave the bailout order but unfortunately one of the crewmembers parachutes was damaged. Kingsley elected to give his chute up and stay with the stricken B-17 and he was killed in action. This scheme was rolled out in 2019 to commemorate 75 years since his heroic actions over Romania. View fullsize The Commemorative Air Force PT-17 Stearman airborne above Fort Worth, Texas.
